Untitled #446

about

This painting of an unknown Western Desert artist represents ceremonies surrounding the creation of the land and various geographical features. In the piece, the concentric circles in the centre represent meeting places, where the mythical ancestors of the Aboriginals gathered during their travels. While at these sites they performed rituals and taught law, thereby shaping the landscape. The parallel lines in between these places are called song lines, they represent the paths over which these ancestors travelled.
