MODERN & CONTEMPORARY ART

EXPO Chicago Online

April 8th - April 12th 2021

SmithDavidson Gallery exhibits a dynamic range of leading modern and contemporary art in various mediums and the gallery is one of the pre-eminent international galleries for Australian Indigenous Art. The gallery’s mission is to acquire and present the work of significant artists whose work has either defined or is expanding the parameters of the visual arts.

This curated presentation features works by renowned Australian Aboriginal Artists, including Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Freddie Timms, George Tjungurrayi, Naata Nungurrayi and Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri in dialogue with works of Twentieth Century Art by prominent artists working in Europe and North America including Sam Francis, Manoucher Yektai, Marino Marini, Lucio Fontana and Toshimitsu Imai.

The exhibition shows the contradictions and similarities in Western and Australian indigenous art. The academic aspects in western art are opposed to the more traditional aspects in the Australian Aboriginal Art. However these differences in background, reason and approach also bring to light the definite similarities in spatiality, energy and meaning. Whether the art was created with an academic perspective or with a traditional approach, the presented artworks are experienced in a similar way and have a similar energy and the search to present spatiality that can be felt by the viewer.
