Simon Willem Maris

Simon Willem Maris was a Dutch painter and was born in The Haque in 1873. He was the son and student of the famous Dutch painter Willem Maris. During his life he called several cities home, such as The Haque, Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris. He received his artistic training at Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Antwerp Art Academy in Belgium and made several study trips to France and Italy. Today he is well known for his portraits, mostly of women. After marrying in 1908 he often painted his wife, Cornelia den Breejen, and later his two children, Mies and Thijs. Furthermore, Maris was a close friend of the artist Piet Mondriaan. The work of Maris is to be admired in several Dutch museums, including the world-renowned Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum in The Haque.
